Road Trip with a Gun

Planning a trip to visit family and got to figure out the best route. I want to bring my firearm, but going through New York State makes things complicated. It feels like avoiding NY adds a crazy amount of drive time. Just wondering if anyone else has tackled this and what option you went with. I'm open to suggestions if there are any good routes or tips to consider.
