I'm considering getting a shotgun for home defense and could use some pointers from anyone who's been there. I'm stuck between a 12-gauge and a 20-gauge. I get that the 12ga packs more punch, but I've heard the 20ga is easier on the recoil and might be better for close quarters. What do you all think?

What about barrel length and stock configuration? Are there specific features I should focus on for home defense? I need something reliable and straightforward.

Also, how crucial is training? I've fired shotguns before, but nothing extensive. What kind of practice should I aim for to be ready if the time comes?

18" 12ga pump, improved cylinder choke with #4 turkey shot. Plenty of stopping power at HD distances, plus the cylinder choke will give maximum spread. No real need to aim, just point in the general direction. Pump shotgun racking sound is enough in and of itself.

Be careful. Most of what is said about shotguns is hype.

They are long. Hard to move through the house.

They generally hold less rounds than a single stack auto….5-7 vs 20-30 for the most basic PCC or carbine

Hard to aim. People report that you just pull the trigger and the pattern spreads to hit whatever. Go pattern a shotgun at 5' to 35'. Even an open choke with buckshot is a tight cluster.

Hard recoil. This is not a macho comment. Shoot a PCC as fast as you can shoot while putting all on a paper plate. Do the same with a shotgun. What were your split times?

Shotguns are movie guns. Looks great in the movies, but reality is suspect. If you want to look tough, follow Biden's advice….buy a shotgun. If you want to be effective, get a carbine/pcc.
