I shot my new Taurus 817. The trigger action is smooth and not at all heavy. I replaced the smaller factory grip with a Hogue Mono Grip. The gun shoots good. Being close to 2lb. It handles 38 ammo very well. Even +P ammo was no big deal. This will be my waistband gun for a while with a J-Frame in my pocket.

I have had good luck with Taurus. Only issue I had was a broken ejector on a PT111.
If you don't know Taurus well getting a part from them is not going to happen.
Plus, if I sent it in they would not fix it and give me something else I didn't want.
Found a parts kit on Gunbroker to fix it.

I'd be putting some locktite on that cylinder release screw. Taurus revolvers haven a habit of those loosening up.

I owned a ported raging bull 44mag years ago. Shot well with no issues. Just shot a snubnosed taurus 357mag the other day. Don't know the model number, 2" bbl and a 5-shot. It belongs to a friend that was her husbands. He passed away and she never shot it. Beautiful revolver, like new. It's wayyyyyyy too much gun for her with 357mags in it. Gave her a bunch of 38spl's.

That taurus will serve you well.

This is my 14th Taurus Revolver. I've had good luck with them. Bought parts once after I lost them in the woods. No problem getting them. Used the warranty for a couple repairs. One breakdown was their fault one mine. No problem with warranty repair. Another time I had a round that must have got a double charge. When it went off, I new it wasn't good. It ruined the gun. Taurus scrapped it and let me pick a replacement. FREE

Yea I found out the hard way about the cylinder release screw. My 617 came loose. I wasn't paying attention to it, I was shooting at my camp in PA. The gun locked up. Taurus fixed it with no problems and fast also. The gun had live ammo in it and I had to take it apart to get it unloaded. That didn't matter and it didn't matter that I had let the screw come loose. They fixed it and sent it back all no charge.

I'm circling the drain, or I'd be buying the different taurus revolvers. Their combo revolvers like the 692 series with the 38spl/357mag & 9mm cylinders look interesting.

It's had to beat ported bbl's and taurus has a pretty good lineup of them.

I like Taurus, considering they were the only revolver I could buy when I turned 21...but I'm always a bit nervous about the build quality these days.

Alan- I would've quoted you but I wanted to address the post in general. Taurus has really stepped their game up over the last few years, their new CEO came from a different company and his immediate focus was turning QC and CS around. I have a Taurus G3c that does nightstand duty, it's lasted longer than some more expensive guns from better brands.

As for the 817, why not just make it in 357 mag? When they bring back the 617 I'll be all over it especially if they offer it with a 3 inch barrel. I just don't do 38 only revolvers when a 357 can use both, I'm not interested in cutting my ammo options in half. Every time I've bought a 38 I regretted not getting a 357 instead, I've done it twice now and lesson learned. The only exceptions I'll make to that rule are #1, if I were to find a smoking deal on a vintage S&W J or K frame or #2 if were talking about the 38/44 HD or a Ruger Speed or Service Six chambered in 38 because they cam handle 38/44 loads.

Nice revolver OP and I'm not knocking your choice, 7 rounds of 38+p is nothing to sneeze at and it makes a hell of a carry gun. I'd just rather have the same gun in 357 mag.
