"Prison guns" and other forgotten firearm programs

The prison-made 1911s are wild, inmates at certain facilities literally manufactured WWII sidearms as part of work programs. Quality was reportedly all over the place but some are collectible now...similar programs existed for military rifles. It's a weird footnote in firearms history that most people don't know about
 
This makes me think about how guns are related to things that's much bigger than just the person pulling the trigger. The story behind how something is made can show some facts that people would rather not think about.
