Focus on safety and fundamentals before worrying about speed or gear. Dry fire more than you think you should. Everyone wants to shoot fast but nobody wants to admit they need basics..We all actually do
 
Start with a larger sized, optics ready, common use gun with a thumb safety.

I like the S&W m&p, but there are many.

Focus on getting 100% comfortable with safe gun handling. Then worry about speed, accuracy, carry, etc.
