i've had several silvas over the years, and all of their liquid filled ones fail pretty quickly. silva of Sweden owned the patent . the patent expired. johnson outdoors grabbed it up and years later the original silva got it back. so most of mine were the in-between years.
i've got maybe 2 of the old brunton basic baseplates for about 20 years. and they are still good, but the markings are a little biggish. my silva mc2 global mirrored with baseplate is still going strong with no bubbles at about 5 years old now.

the 2 i have my eye on now are the brunton truark20 and the suunto MB6 matchbox , but thats a bit lower on my wish list. has anybody played with the new production bruntons. i know they had some manufacturing upgrades recently.

I've had a Suunto for a few years. Clear base and mirror... I'm not great at makes/models... But I'm very happy with it

I thought that once the patent expired, that protection is over, at least on the product or design in question. The product may then be copied and produced by anyone without restriction. Johnson outdoors should have been able to continue to produce it, no?
