I thought I'd get used to it...Six months in and I still constantly adjust and check it. Does it ever become truly comfortable or do you always feel it there?

Yes, it becomes second nature at some point. If you're not doing anything illegal, don't overthink it. It also helps to understand that most people are completely oblivious to what others are wearing on their belts. I've open carried and am convinced few people even notice if it's behind your hip. I good belt built for supporting the weight of a handgun in a good holster is the key, and makes a HUGE difference in comfort and confidence. I've regularly carried a 1911 with two spare mags for over three decades. This winter I've switched it up to a Beretta M9 and one spare. Both are large but I forget I have them on, and go about my business. In summer, I either carry the 1911 or a compact 9mm depending on clothing.

I actually feel weird if I forget it before I walk out the door. A good belt and a good holster make a big difference.
I don't think it's about comfort, but more about making it not as uncomfortable as a block of metal in your waist band.
Once you get a good belt and holster combo that's secure you will be able to adapt and not worry about it.
4 o'clock is the most comfortable, but not as quick as appendix

It gets easier with time, but most always notice it a little

Finding the right holster, gun and carry position took a while for me. I tried a lot of different combinations. My final and most comfortable position and holster I tried was a cross draw De Santis holster. Being left handed that fixed my concerns about being able to draw my gun while in my truck. My gun choice was the Springfield Hellcat. The combination works well for me. Compact, doesn’t print and easy to draw if needed. Most of all, it’s comfortable to carry. I’ve actually walked in the house forgetting I was carrying until I went to bed that evening.

I occasionally carry other pistols and calibers but this combination works the best for me. Enjoy your search and eventually you will find what works best for you.
