Has anyone here replaced their own barrel?

I am thinking about swapping the barrel on my AR build but wondering if it's worth doing myself or just paying a gunsmith. If you've got some experience, how difficult was it really?

Unless you have the right tools, like a vise block and torque wrench, it's a massive headache. Trust me, pay the twenty bucks to a 'smith, it's totally worth skipping the frustration

I don't have a proper vise block yet. What about headspacing? Is that something I need to worry about or does that usually work out fine with quality barrels?

if your ok with tools, it isnt going to be bad if they assembled it correctly. they should of used copper anti seize. you just wont know till you start into it. if your going to put in a custom barrel nut or the original delta spring. you could need some heat on the receiver , from a heat gun. maybe a vise grip and a dead blow , to tap it out, while locked into a vise.

strip your bolt firing pin and ejector and use a live or dummy round to headspace . i think thats how we did it. but your going to need a set of blocks, some pin punches/ a solid vise/ torq wrench and some patience .

Yea it depends on how tight the current barrel is. I had one that I had to clamp to a cinder block, run a 2x4 through the block, and then park my truck on the 2x4 in order to keep it stationary to get enough torque to break it loose. I've heard of them breaking free with minimum effort.... But my experience is they're usually tight tight TIGHT!!!!
If youre used to tinkering with things then take a swing at it!
If you do manage to succeed just make sure to use some kind of anti seize on the threads of your new one
