I'm old school, use a bolt action. My buddy uses an AR-10. We argue about it every season. He says quick follow-up shots matter. I say one good shot is all you need. What do you guys actually hunt with?

Bolt guns are light, simple and easy in the field. The modern sporting rifle is fine, but at a higher weight and lower performance. The rapid shot capability is rarely usable.

I agree with the “One shot is all you need” theory. That’s why I hunted with a T/C Contender pistol for over 25 years. A few years ago I switched to a lever action rifle. A Marlin 1894 in 44 magnum. Yes, that does give me a follow up shot if I need it. So far it hasn’t been needed.

Agreed, as of late, I use a matchlock

Do you hunt in Ohio like that? I ask because I have hunted some nasty downpours in Ohio.
I actually don't use a rifle when i hunt in Ohio (other than varmints) , my Ohio hunting has always been with a bow. Deer gun season in Ohio is a little too crowded for me in the places I've hunted.
