I’m from MT originally. For me it was chasing OH deer on microplots with shotguns, the 45-70, then 350 legend…..until the city of Columbus screwed us out of some hunting area and a couple othe micro places fell apart. Still enjoyed the guns and the time in the field. Might try Ohio again with the grandson. I’ll probably just hit the road and talk to folks. That is usually wasted time, but fun to talk to folks.

Ohio hunting sounds like chess on postage stamps, still somehow fun every season...

I’ve hunted Ohio since I was 12 years old. Being 70 this year that adds up to a lot of walking and hunting. For the vast majority of those years I hunted Wayne National and did very well. So I have hunted through the shotgun era, then pistols and now rifles. I’ve enjoyed them all and have taken deer with all of them. Now I hunt private land only because it’s my hunting buddies property. I have to admit, having 150 acres to yourself does make things easier.

I started out hunting public land in Ohio and then received access to private land. Although the private land is more predictable for deer since it's by food sources, I am still drawn back to the public land because of the large forest and just the challenge of finding the deer. I've taken more deer on private land but enjoy the public experience each year.

Here is a sample of Ohio deer that were taken on public land. My hunting buddy since high school has taken these over the years. He has more but is running out of room on the wall. He is a very dedicated hunter, much more than I am. All of these were taken on Wayne National. If you’re wondering, yes I’m jealous.

Hunting those Ohio microplots with shotguns sounds like quite a unique challenge. The whole story about Columbus politics ruining hunting access, though, that feels like a familiar tune. I really hope you get a chance to get back out there with your grandson.
