I’m new to fishing and thinking about taking my son out for his first time. We saw some kids’ fishing rods at the store and they looked cute, but I’m not sure if they’re actually useful. I didn’t really fish growing up and want to make this a fun experience for him. Any suggestions on beginner setups or bait that won’t break the bank?

Those "cute" little fishing set-ups are perfect for the youngsters. Dad may want to spend a little extra and get a grown up size rig. As for bait, worms are killer for pan fish like bluegill and crappie. Small hooks and a bobber. The key for kids is action, they gotta catch fish or they will just get bored and say "Meh, this ain't no fun, Dad"

Getting your son out on the water for the first time is a memory you'll both treasure. Start with a simple spincast rod and reel, grab some worms, and remember that fun is the real catch of the day

I agree with the above, even if the fish you catch aren't keepers catching a few insures the child's interest. That will be as much fun for dad as the child. Back to the question, while the kids rods will be much like their clothes (they'll quickly outgrow it) they aren't all that bad for a child and work just like the larger rod/reel combos. Stay with the spincast tackle for ease of use (that goes for Dad as well). Most of all: Enjoy!
